Keep it Like a Secret

Best Valentine Ever.

10:44 a.m., Feb. 14, 2002

My friend Andy Ross made this for our college newspaper.

Awesome.

I'm pretty on the fence about the holiday. I mean, yeah, it's kinda lame, but I can't say it's worth getting upset about. It's pretty inoffensive when it comes down to it. I'm not going to get upset about a holiday that suggests you should celebrate the people you love.

I've had some pretty crappy Valentine's in the past, but I mean, I've had pretty crappy March 15ths, and August 23rds, as well. It's just a day. And some of the crappiest Valentine's Days were also the best.

Like my freshman year of college. My beloved best friend Clara and I went and saw Swingers at the Union and then went out for coffee. It was nice. Then I accidentally took too much of the cold medication I was on, and had to go to the urgent care center because I couldn't quit vomiting. But it wasn't so bad. I spent the night with someone I loved.

My sophomore year, my ex-boyfriend ran over my foot on Feb. 13. But it was okay. My roommates and I decided to stay in and have a Coen Brothers marathon. The ex showed up and even brought me chocolates. It was pretty sweet.

Or my junior year. I had to close the video store by myself, but earlier that evening, Clara and I watched Bonnie and Clyde.

The past two years, Keith and I have forgotten to make reservations until the 12th or so, and gone to the same Italian restaurant at 9 p.m. Last year, our friends Stephen and Denise had their baby at 11 p.m., calling us moments after he was delivered. And we stayed up all night, in wonder, struck by how amazing life is.

It's not a holiday that I build my life around or that I trump up as being overly special. But it's not a holiday to get upset over. It can be nice, whether you're with someone or you're not. Save your wrath for Sweetest Day.
