Keep it Like a Secret

Say a little prayer

9:14 a.m., May. 03, 2003

Something bad happened at work this week. I didn't get fired or laid off or anything; the bad thing didn't happen to me.

I work with a guy named Dave. He's our interactive marketing director. Dave didn't come in to work on Monday morning. We didn't know why, just that there was some stuff going on at home that needed attention.

Over the weekend, Dave's wife started having a headache that got so brutal, they went to the ER. On Tuesday, she had surgery to remove a three-inch long tumor from her brain. Other than the headache that started on Sunday, she didn't have any other symptoms that something was wrong. Yesterday, they found out it was malignant. She'll start either radiation treatment or chemotherapy this week.

Their kids are 7 and 9. She's only 37. I'm not sure how old he is, but I think he's also 37.

I can't imagine the pain they must be going through, physically and emotionally. I can't imagine being fine one day, and then facing a life-threatening disease the next, not knowing if you'll see your seven-year-old grow into adulthood.

I hope she comes out of this okay.
