Keep it Like a Secret

Shattered glass

2:00 p.m., Oct. 29, 2003

So someone broke into our car last night, smashed our passenger side window, pulled the dashboard out and stole our car stereo/CD player.

We're okay. These things happen and we have insurance, so it's all going to be fine in the end. We'll be out a $100 deductible and then our rates will probably go up. Our mechanic is even fixing the dash for free because we're good customers.

What bothers me most is that it happened right in front of our building, under a street light. We live on a very busy street, even overnight.

One of the risks of living in the city is that these things happen. There's not much you can do. I'm more annoyed by the inconvenience of not using the car for a day or two and going into work late this morning by the damage done to the car.

Oh, and the sense of powerlessness when it comes to protecting myself, my family and my belongings. There's that, too.

I hope whoever took it enjoys the $80 he or she's getting from the pawn shop, plus the 60 cents or so that he/she stole from the arm rests, too. (The thief left the pennies: thanks dude!)

Still, I'm not ready to run to the suburbs yet. These things happen. We're both safe and our car will be back in one piece. It's a drag, but it's not the end of the world.
